It matters because a non-load-bearing wall can be taken down with relatively simple building work, while a load-bearing wall requires a structural engineer to design a beam (and potentially columns or padstones) to carry the loads that wall was supporting.

What Does “Load-Bearing” Actually Mean?
A wall is load-bearing if it carries structural loads from above and transfers them down to the foundations. Those loads typically include:
– The weight of floor joists or beams spanning across the wall
– The weight of walls, ceilings and roofs stacked directly above it
– Any point loads from columns, posts or other structure above
A non-load-bearing wall is essentially a partition — it sits on the floor and divides space, but removing it does not change how the building stands up.
Where Are Load-Bearing Walls Typically Found?
In a typical two-storey UK home, load-bearing walls tend to follow a pattern:
External walls are almost always load-bearing. They support the edges of floor joists and roof structure, and carry the full weight of the building envelope.
Mid-span internal walls — walls running parallel to the ridge and roughly in the centre of the building — are very commonly load-bearing because the floor joists above usually rest on them at mid-span.
Walls directly below another wall on the floor above are frequently carrying that upper wall’s load. If you can see a wall directly above the one you want to remove, assume it is load-bearing until proven otherwise.
Walls running at right-angles to the floor joists are more likely to be load-bearing than walls running parallel to the joists, which can sometimes be non-structural.
Chimney breast walls — walls containing a chimney breast — are almost always structural on every floor they pass through.
Walls That Are Typically Non-Load-Bearing
Lightweight studwork partitions added during a refurbishment are often non-load-bearing, particularly if:
– They run parallel to the floor joists above (no load to carry)
– They are clearly a later addition to the original building layout
– They are timber stud rather than masonry (though this alone is not conclusive)
Even so, do not assume a wall is non-structural just because it is timber-framed or feels insubstantial. Some stud walls carry point loads or provide lateral stability.
How to Check Properly
The only reliable way to confirm whether a wall is load-bearing is to trace the load path from the roof down to the foundations, checking what bears onto what at each level. This typically involves:
1. Looking in the loft to understand which direction the rafters and ceiling joists span
2. Lifting a floorboard above the wall in question to see if joists rest on it
3. Checking whether any walls, beams or structural elements sit directly above the wall at each storey
If in doubt, treat the wall as load-bearing and commission a structural engineer to review it. The cost of a set of beam calculations is far smaller than the cost of discovering mid-build that the ceiling has started to deflect.
What Happens If the Wall Is Load-Bearing?
If the wall is load-bearing, removing it without replacement means the loads it was carrying have nowhere to go. The solution is a structural steel or timber beam (or occasionally a concrete element) that spans across the new opening and carries those loads to new support points — typically padstones on the walls at either side.
The beam is sized by a structural engineer who calculates the loads from the floors, walls and roof above and selects a section large enough to span the required distance without excessive deflection.
