Column levels on structural drawings can be confusing when the column extends below finished floor level to its foundation. Here's how column levels are described and who confirms the final level.

The level of a steel column — where it starts and ends — is sometimes a source of site confusion, particularly when the structural drawings show a column described as being at “ground floor level” but the construction suggests it should extend below the finished floor.

Why Columns Often Extend Below Finished Floor Level

A steel column sitting on a pad foundation, or on a stub column from a ground beam, does not start at the finished floor surface. It starts at the bearing level — the top of the pad foundation or padstone. Depending on the total floor construction depth (slab, screed, insulation, membrane), this could be several hundred millimetres below finished floor level.

When the drawings say a column is at “ground floor level,” this means the column head is at approximately the level of the structure above — but the column base extends downward, through the floor build-up zone, to the foundation bearing level.

Who Confirms the Final Column Level?

Final column levels are confirmed by the contractor — ideally with input from the architectural consultant — once the foundation bearing level and finished floor build-up are both confirmed on site.

If there is no architect, the contractor establishes the final column level from their own site dimensions and cross-references this against the structural drawings.

What to Do If the Level Is Wrong

If the column as delivered is the wrong length for the actual site conditions, raise a Change Request with PorthouseDean before installation. A column that is too short may not reach the beam above. A column that is too long and cannot be shortened on site without verification may affect the loads transferred to the foundation.

Do not cut a column shorter or use packer plates to extend it without engineering confirmation.
