Famous Examples of Structural Engineering Projects

Throughout history there have been a number of examples of structural engineering projects that have drawn admiration and respect.

At PorthouseDean, we take great pride in the role our engineers play in creating safe, stable, and innovative structures that can stand for decades. From creating the most iconic skyscrapers and historic landmarks in the world, right down to building your dream home or renovating your loft, a structural engineer will have their hand in all.

In this blog we will outline what the role of a structural engineer actually looks like, before discussing a number of famous examples of structural engineering projects that demonstrate the importance and complexity of the role.

What Does a Structural Engineer do in Construction?

A structural engineer on a project can be expected to provide a wide range of services. Their role is key to ensuring safe, stable structures that meet all legal requirements while being built as efficiently as possible. They utilise their experience and expertise to make detailed calculations and solve complex challenges that contribute to the ultimate success of the project.

Ultimately, a structural engineer is on hand to ensure that your construction project can be completed properly. They act to guarantee that while a new build property or an extension/renovation can be built with design in mind — it should never, under any circumstances, compromise when it comes to safety or structural integrity.

Top Examples of Structural Engineering Projects

There are a number of famous examples of structural engineering projects in history — structures that have been admired for years, and in some cases, centuries. For good or bad, projects like the Hoover Dam, Burj Khalifa, renovations to The White House, and, in many ways, The Leaning Tower of Pisa can all be qualified as feats of structural engineering.

Top examples of structural engineering projects, both in recent years and throughout history, include:

Burj Khalifa

The tallest building in the world since its inauguration back in 2010, the sheer size of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai meant that the work of the structural engineers instructed on the project were required to think outside the box and innovate in a number of areas.

The most notable aspects of the Burj Khalifa that drew particular attention from the structural engineer include:

  • Designing the Foundation: Due to the sheer size and weight of the structure, significant work was required to ensure there was no danger of toppling.
  • Wind Resistance: The height of the tower represented another challenge for structural engineers. They were forced to conduct a series of tests and calculations to understand the building’s response to extreme wind. This in turn shaped the ultimate design of the building..

In order to overcome the virtually unprecedented difficulties of constructing the Burj Khalifa, the architect and structural engineers needed to work particularly closely, not only with each other but with the construction team. It is the close–knit work of these three groups that led to this marvel of modern engineering and architecture opening its doors.

The White House

Likely the most famous residence in the entire world. The White House was built in 1800. However, in the last 200+ years there have been a number of renovations and updates that have each required all involved to act delicately to protect the history of the building, and significant structural engineering work as well.

One of the most extensive updates to the White House, and one that required a great deal of structural engineering input would be the Truman reconstruction of 1948-52. The project was a comprehensive overhaul of the property, including alterations to the interior structure, utilities, as well as the need to reinforce the core of the structure to support the additional weight.

To be more specific, the following structural engineering work took place:

  • Reinforcement work to the building’s load-bearing elements to accommodate new amenities and utilities.
  • Structural engineers assess the building’s walls, columns, and beams in order to address any foundational issues and spot necessary structural repairs.
  • Measures were implemented to the building to increase its resistance to seismic forces.
  • Structural engineers were required to ensure that when necessary updates to the roof and exterior walls of the property were made, that they would be structurally sound and safe.

Hoover Dam

Situated directly on the Colorado River, between the US states of Nevada and Arizona, stands the Hoover Dam. Constructed during the presidential candidacy of Herbert Hoover, where it derived its name, the dam was built to generate electricity, while also acting as a system to control flooding and store excess water.

A structural engineer on this project will have been vital due to a number of different factors. The dam was constructed during a serious period of financial issues for the United States. The Great Depression had a huge knock on effect on all manners of life in America of the day.

Key aspects of the project that a structural engineer will have worked closely on would include, but by no means be limited to, conducting extensive foundation and structural analysis. They also will have needed to closely consider what they could do to safeguard the structure against the common environmental conditions in the area — built in an area with frequent seismic activity, the engineers will have been tasked with assessing the dam’s ability to withstand these intense forces and what can be done to better shore it up.

Had the structural engineer working on the Hoover Dam project not performed his assessments and calculations well, the dam could have had serious structural issues. This could have led to significant loss of human life and compounded the ongoing economic and social challenges the USA were facing at the time.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The ‘Torre Pendente di Pisa’ as Italians would refer to it as, is one of the most famous and revered structures in the entire world. Located in the heart of the city of Pisa, Italy, the tower is merely a part of a wider complex of buildings known in English as the ‘Square of Miracles’.

The most famous thing about the tower is, as the nickname would suggest, its lean. Its construction began in the 12th Century. However, even then, it quickly became clear that there were issues with the tower’s design and construction.

While disruption to construction as a result of wars and political unrest in the region, the Leaning Tower of Pisa’s predicament can primarily be blamed on a combination of two issues: it’s sheer weight and the fact it was built on very soft soil. Although the involvement of a structural engineer would have resolved this situation, we would then have been robbed of one of arguably the most famous photo poses on Earth.

While work in recent years has been done to ‘reduce the lean’, a modern structural engineer would have been able to much better spot the underlying issues causing it and prevent it.

Some methods a structural engineer could employ to avoid it leaning were they working on the Tower of Pisa today include:

  • Stabilise the foundations
  • Consider counterweights
  • Reinforce the soil to increase its load-bearing capacity

PorthouseDean, Structural Engineering You Can Count On

As we have outlined above, proper and thorough structural engineering work is vital if you want your structure to stand tall and strong for decades to come.

The safety of the occupants of these high-profile buildings, as well as every project we work on, is paramount. The stakes are high, no matter what project a structural engineer works on. From the tallest towers in the world, to vital foundational basement work, when human safety is at risk, the work needs to be done properly.

The successful completion of each of the examples of structural engineer projects highlighted in this blog required the significant expertise of the highly skilled engineer working on them — to come up with solutions to the variety of challenges they were faced with.

At PorthouseDean, we understand the responsibility on our shoulders. We  approach each and every project we are instructed on with the same level of dedication, precision, and efficiency. From modern marvels like the Burj Khalifa and historical landmarks like The White House, to the various projects our expert team have worked on over the years, we take inspiration from all in order to create solutions that will help our work withstand the test of time.
