Joist and Rafter Connections to Beams: Who Details This?

How a timber floor joist or rafter then connects to the side or top of that beam is, in most cases, a construction detail that falls within the builder’s or architect’s scope, not the structural engineer’s.
Why This Falls Outside the Structural Calculations
The connection between a timber joist and a steel beam in a domestic context is a minor construction detail. The forces involved (the joist hanging load) are not of a magnitude that changes the beam design. Joist hangers, timber packing, and coach screws all transfer the load adequately in standard configurations.
Because the choice of joist hanger type, timber packer size, and fixing method does not affect the structural calculations, it falls outside scope. The structural engineer designs the structural members; the builder decides on the site-level detail for connecting secondary elements to them.
What the Rules Are
The key structural constraint is this: avoid a vertical offset of more than 300 mm between the centreline of the joist or rafter and the centreline of the beam it connects to.
Where the offset is within 300 mm, standard connection hardware — joist hangers, toothed plate connectors, coach screws — is adequate. Beyond 300 mm, the eccentricity can introduce torsion into the beam, which needs to be checked structurally.

Practical Guidance
For common scenarios:
– Joist bearing on top of beam: Standard approach — joist sits on beam top flange, no hanger needed. Ensure joists are nailed or screwed to prevent rolling.
– Joist hanging from flange (side connection, joist at same level as bottom flange): Use a face-mounted joist hanger, sized for the joist depth, fixed with full complement of manufacturer’s nails.

– Rafter to ridge beam: Standard rafter-to-ridge connection — birds-mouth notch or framing anchor, specified by architect.
