Why Is There a Column Specified in My External Wall?
A steel column showing up in your external wall drawing surprises many clients — external walls are masonry, so why does a separate steel element need to sit inside one? There are two distinct reasons, and your structural engineer can tell you which applies to your project.
Reason 1: Lateral (Wind) Stability
The most common reason is that the external wall panel needs lateral support to resist wind pressure. Masonry walls have limits on how large a freestanding panel can be before it becomes vulnerable to racking sideways — those limits are defined by Building Regulations.
When a wall panel is too large to stand up to wind pressure without extra help, a steel column (wind post) is introduced within the wall to stiffen it. The column transfers wind load from the masonry into the floor and roof structure, keeping the panel stable.
In this scenario, the column is not carrying anything vertically — its entire job is to brace the wall laterally.
Reason 2: The Beam Load Is Too High for Masonry Alone
The second reason is vertical load. When a steel beam above bears onto the wall, the concentrated point load at the end of that beam may be too great for masonry to carry safely. Masonry has a limited compressive capacity, especially if it is older or lower quality.
In this situation, a steel column is introduced to carry that point load directly down to a pad foundation, bypassing the masonry entirely. The column effectively acts as a direct structural path from beam to ground.
Can the Column Be Replaced With Masonry?
If you prefer not to have a steel column, the structural equivalent in masonry is a pier — a thickened section of brickwork or blockwork. To achieve the same lateral bracing or load-carrying capacity as a typical steel column, a masonry pier generally needs to be around 600–700 mm deep in plan. This is a significant depth and may eat into usable floor space or clash with window and door positions.
Before changing from steel to masonry, your structural engineer needs to review the arrangement to confirm the pier size and the implications for foundations.
How to Request a Change
If the column position does not suit your layout, contact your structural engineer with a Change Request. In many cases, relocating or substituting a column is achievable, but it always requires the engineer to recalculate the affected elements. Do not instruct your builder to omit or move the column without checking first.
