What Level Does the Steelwork Need to Be?

Exact steel beam levels are not set by the structural engineer — they are confirmed by the architect and contractor. Here's why and what the typical tolerance is.

What Level Does the Steelwork Need to Be?

Structural engineers design beams to carry loads — not to coordinate floor finishes, ceiling heights and door head levels. The exact soffit level of a steel beam is almost always an architectural question, not a structural one.

Why the Structural Engineer Does Not Set Final Levels

The structural capacity of a steel beam is independent of where it sits vertically within a floor zone — within normal tolerance limits. A 203 × 203 UC that can span 6 metres does so whether it sits at 2,450 mm floor-to-soffit or 2,380 mm. Changing the beam level by 100–200 mm makes no structural difference, provided it remains within the floor void and the connections can still work geometrically.

Who Confirms Final Levels?

The architect or architectural designer determines beam levels to suit:

– Floor-to-ceiling heights (both above and below the beam)
– The build-up thicknesses of finishes (screed, insulation, boarding)
– Door head heights and window sill levels

If no architect is engaged, the builder and fabricator confirm the levels between them based on the structural and architectural intent.

What if There Is No Architect on the Project?

For projects with no architect (common for straightforward wall removals and beam installations), the builder typically determines the beam level based on the floor build-up above, the desired ceiling finish below and the padstone positions. A practical tolerance of ±100–200 mm from a nominal level is usually acceptable without any structural recalculation.
