Timber Joist Connection to the Side of a Steel Beam for a Flush Ceiling

Where timber joists frame into the side of a steel beam for a flush ceiling finish, timber packers in the web create a robust fixing surface. No structural calcs are typically needed.

In a flush ceiling installation, the underside of the steel beam aligns with the underside of the surrounding timber joists. This means the joists cannot bear on top of the steel — they must connect into its side. The most practical way to achieve this in domestic construction is with timber packers in the steel web, creating a nailer surface to which short joist lengths can be fixed.

How It Works

Timber blocking is cut to fit snugly between the flanges of the steel section, within the web space. These packers are secured to the web (typically by drilling and bolting through the steel, or by using screws through the flanges if the section allows) and provide a continuous timber face inside the steel section.

Short joist lengths — sometimes called “trimmer joists” or “cripple joists” — are then toe-nailed or screw-fixed into this timber packer face to complete the floor structure.

Does It Need Structural Calculations?

In almost all domestic cases, no. This is a construction detail, not a structural modification. It does not change the forces on the steel beam, the loads on the padstones, or the design of the floor system. The steel beam still carries the same load in the same way.

Building Control Officers typically treat timber packer connections as minor construction details that fall within the builder’s responsibility. In most cases, this will not require a formal drawing amendment or structural calculation.

Practical Points

– Packer timber: Use structural timber (C16 or C24) or engineered timber. Avoid untreated timber in damp conditions.
– Packer fixing: Packers must be secure before joists are fixed — a loose packer will cause the floor to creak and may need remedial access. Use coach screws or bolts through the web for reliability.
– Joist fixings: Toe-nailing to packers is acceptable. Joist hangers (specifically designed for web mounting) are an alternative for a cleaner installation.
– Stability: The steel beam should be braced or restrained at each end before loadbearing from joists is applied.

When to Raise a Change Request

If you want PorthouseDean to formally amend the drawings to show the packer detail, you can raise a Change Request. However, for standard domestic applications where the builder is detailing this themselves, it is generally not necessary. The packer arrangement is an accepted and well-understood construction method that most experienced builders are familiar with.

Contact us if your project has unusual constraints — e.g. the floor is subject to heavy point loads, or the beam depth is not standard — and you want the arrangement formally reviewed.
