Why Do I Need a Ridge Beam in My Loft Conversion?
A traditional cut timber roof is a triangulated structure. The rafters push outward at the top of the walls, and this thrust is resisted by the ceiling joists — which act as tension ties across the base of the triangle. Purlins support the rafters at mid-span, and collar ties further up the rafters add intermediate triangulation.
When you convert a loft, you typically need to remove or relocate these elements to create usable head height. Remove the triangulation without replacing its structural function, and the roof will spread — the walls push outward, the ridge drops, and the roof progressively deforms.
A ridge beam is the engineered solution.
What a Ridge Beam Does
A properly designed ridge beam converts the roof from a triangulated thrust structure to a beam-supported structure. Instead of the ridge being a passive timber that the rafters lean against, it becomes a primary load-bearing element that:
– Carries approximately half the total roof load (the other half goes to the eaves/wall plate level)
– Transfers load vertically down to supporting structure below
– Eliminates horizontal thrust at the eaves — or significantly reduces it
With the ridge beam in place, the purlins, collar ties, and (in most designs) the original ceiling joists can be removed, cleared, or replaced with a new floor structure.
What the Ridge Beam Bears Onto
The ridge beam must have adequate support at each end. Typically:
– Gable walls at each end of the terrace or semi, where the ridge lands onto the gable wall masonry (padstone required)
– Structural steelwork below, where the ridge is picked up by columns or cross beams running down to the floor level
– Party walls in terraced or semi-detached properties, with padstones on the party wall masonry
Where the ridge lands onto a wall that was not originally designed to carry the roof load directly (e.g. a hip-end where there is no gable), the structural arrangement must be carefully designed to route the load down through the building.
New Floor Joists
In almost all loft conversions, a new floor structure is provided at the loft level. The new floor joists — designed by PorthouseDean — are sized to span between the walls and support the new habitable space. The floor joists also provide horizontal restraint to the base of the rafters, replacing some of the triangulation function that the original ceiling joists provided.
When Is the Ridge Beam Not Required?
Where the existing roof triangulation can be maintained throughout — for example, in a modest dormer where collar ties and ceiling joists remain undisturbed — a ridge beam may not be necessary. However, most full loft conversions require one, and this will be confirmed at the design stage.
